James Barker was a “Love Island USA” executive producer who died at the age of 40, on 12th June, in Fiji during production after suffering an unexpected medical emergency. He was honored in Tuesday’s episode of the show.
Barker’s death was confirmed by ITV America and Peacock in June 2026. According to the networks, he suffered an “unexpected medical emergency” during production of Love Island USA Season 8. While additional details surrounding the incident have not been publicly disclosed, colleagues and friends have paid tribute to a producer widely respected for his creativity, leadership, and passion for storytelling.
James Barker’s Career in Television
Barker studied cinematography and film and video production at New York Film Academy and screenwriting at Colorado Film School. Baker’s career in unscripted television has span over more than a decade. He began his career in entertainment industry in 2011 at Leftfield Pictures and contributed to popular reality series such as Pawn Stars, Counting Cars, and Forged in Fire. Over the years, he expanded his resume with production roles on acclaimed shows including Queer Eye, Claim to Fame, and Love Island Games.
He joined Love Island USA in 2020 as a story producer during the show’s second season, helping guide the series through a period of rapid growth and increasing popularity. His talent for crafting compelling story lines and balancing romance, drama, and humor quickly earned him promotions, eventually leading to his role as executive producer for the franchise’s final three seasons.
During his tenure, Barker helped oversee some of the show’s most memorable moments, including dramatic Casa Amor recouplings, fan-favorite romances, and emotional finales that became major talking points on social media. He was also instrumental in the show’s transition to Peacock, a move that expanded the series’ audience and allowed for a more ambitious production style. James Barker’s Partner: Adam Roth
Barker is survived by his long-term partner, Adam Roth, CEO of Silent Partner Advisory. The couple have been together for over four years and lived together in Brooklyn, New York.They recently purchased their first home in Brooklyn and were known among friends for their shared love of music, live events, and the arts.
On his Instagram page, Adam paid tribute to James. He also added that the song used during the tribute on the episode was Next To Me which would have been their wedding song. He added that the song was very significant to them as it was played in a previous season during James texted him and said ‘there’s a musical postcard for you in tonight’s episode.” He said he believes in signs and he knows James will be sending him musical postcards forever.On his Instagram page, Adam paid tribute to James.
