He began his journalism career at The Roanoke Times and World-News. He then joined CNN in 1997 as a Justice Department correspondent. During his tenure at CNN, he broke news including terrorism, cyber-crime, the hunt for Osama bin Laden, the FBI’s Most Wanted list and the Justice Department’s involvement in the Elian Gonzalez case.
During his tenure at ABC News, he has covered many major news such as special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation targeting President Trump, the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando and the Boston marathon terrorist attacks. He also reported on the death of George Floyd and the protests against racial injustice and police brutality that followed.
He has also conducted high profile interviews such as, his two exclusive interview with Attorney General William Barr in 2020. He also interviewed FBI Director Chris Wray in December 2019, following the release of he DOJ watchdog report focused on the Russia investigation. In 2021, he conducted first exclusive television interview with U.S. Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn who protected the Capitol against armed insurrectionist on January 6. Dunn was the first U.S. Capitol Police officer to speak publicly about the events.
He also led important investigations at ABC News including: insight into how COVID-19 spread so broadly and quickly throughout the United States, an analysis of voluntarily reported arrest data which revealed a stark racial disparity in the U.S. and an in-depth look at the opioid epidemic crisis in America.
During the terrorist attacks of September 11th, he was part of the ABC’s team of correspondents who covered the attacks and he continues to report on all aspects of the aftermath of those attacks.
