Anderson joined ESPN as an ESPNEWS anchor in June 1999, after working as a weekend sports anchor for KPHO-TV in Phoenix, Arizona, from 1996 to 1999. He worked as a sports reporter and weekend sports anchor for KOTV in Tulsa. He has been a sports photographer and reporter for KTUL-TV in Tulsa from 1988 to 1990. Anderson began his broadcasting career at Columbia, Missouri’s KOMU-TV. Anderson made his debut as a co-host of ESPN’s coverage of the 2013 ING New York City Marathon on November 3, 2013.
Additionally, he co-hosted the five-hour race telecast with colleague SportsCenter anchor Hannah Storm. John was previously a co-host of ABC’s Wipeout, an extreme obstacle-course series. In 1994 and 1995, he received the Oklahoma Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists’ Excellent Sports Feature Reporting Award. In 1997, he got the Associated Press Television Award in Arizona for outstanding performance in broadcast journalism.

Anderson and his wife founded the Anderson Family Charitable Foundation in the fall of 2009 to assist provide backpacks, school materials, and food to impoverished children. Along with all that, Anderson ran the New York City Marathon as Captain of Team Tillman in November 2010. This was to raise money for the Pat Tillman Foundation.
