Lisa Millar Biography

Lisa Joy Millar is an Australian television news presenter and journalist who co-hosts ABC’s  News Breakfast alongside Michael Rowland. She previously served as a foreign correspondent. She spent 11 years overseas covering major news stories and terrorist attacks in London and Washington D.C. She became the ABC’s North American Bureau Chief in 2009 and six years later, she held the same position at the company’s London Bureau.

Lisa is the daughter of Percival Clarence Millar (father) who was the National Party MP and  Dorothy Millar(mother).  Her father died on 28 November 2017 aged 92. Her father inspired her recent book due to his aviation career.

Since his death, Clarrie Millar has been recognized as a Federal Wide Bay Fellow for his service to the country and his sincere attitude toward public life. Lisa went on to share the most personal side of his Dad,  and why her parents deserve credit for the journalist she is today.

I never had to call Dad to tell him about an article in the newspaper or a story on the television news. He would refuse to be anywhere except in front of the TV at 7:00 p.m. M. “Just in case Lisa has a story.”
I wanted to be a journalist at a young age. There is a tape in which I sing the ABC news theme and interview my little sister. Dad found it remarkable that at the tender age of seven he learned to interfere and cut someone off when he felt they were not answering the question.”

Lisa is a divorcee, she was previously married to journalist Sid Maher. Sid is The Australian’s deputy editor since 2004 and former News Corp Australia senior editor. He joined News Corp since its purchase of Queensland Newspapers in 1987. He resigned from News Corp in January 2023 after he was accused of grabbing the chest of a female colleague at Bar Cleveland in Sydney’s Surry Hills on the evening of December 8 and then of intimidating a second female colleague who confronted him about his behaviour.

She later got into a relationship with a Frenchman who she has never revealed his name but it ended after seven years. In her book ‘Daring to Fly’ she credits her failed marriage and relationship to her work. She said that when her husband and boyfriend signed up they didn’t realise she was a work addict.

Lisa began her journalism career after university working in newspaper, then regional TV before landing a role in the then-newly opened ABC Townsville newsroom. She was then picked for Canberra and her career began to pick up.

Lisa began her career as a reporter for ABC’s North Queensland bureau. Following that, she served in the Federal Press Gallery in Canberra, particularly during the 1996 Federal Election campaign when John Howard became Prime Minister.

Moreover, she covered the emergence and fall of Pauline Hanson and her One Nation party during her term as ABC’s state political reporter. Lisa also worked for ABC Radio in Queensland and was a regular journalist for 702 ABC Sydney on Queensland topics. As a result of covering the story that led to Vivian Solon’s discovery in the Philippines, she received the Walkley Award for Investigative Journalism in 2005.

In July 2009, she became ABC’s North American Bureau Chief and later transferred to the London bureau in 2015. In August 2019, she replaced Virginia Triolo on ABC’s News Breakfast.

Lisa loves her work but Lisa loves her work and says she is a work addict having covered 10 terror attacks and covering the breakfast news is the calmest day job she has had in years. She developed PTSD due to some of the things she witnessed. In 2015 she covered the Paris attacks that killed 130 people and injured 494. She however realised she had PTSD after covering Van Nguyen’s hanging in Singapore. She says while going home he heard Ave Maria on radio news story and remembered that the prisoners sung it when Van was walking to the gallows. She started crying and had to pull the car over on the freeway and sob. A month or two later she took part in a focus group with psychologist Cait McMahom from the Dart Center for Journalism & Trauma.

Lisa is not aboriginal.  Nevertheless, she conducted an interview with Darren Chester where she recognized and celebrated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. She identified them as the First Peoples of Australia and Traditional Custodians of the lands where we live, learn and work.

She also writes about a 1993 incident that left her with a fear of flying.
