She became the first woman of color to host the nightly broadcast in the show’s 40-year history when she became a co-host in March 2021. Turner began her career in journalism in 1998 as a reporter and fill-in anchor for WEHT in Evansville, Indiana. She had previously interned at KOMU-TV, an NBC affiliate where she served as a producer and reporter. She later joined WVUE-TV FOX 8 in New Orleans where she worked as a weekday reporter and anchor. During her tenure, she covered Hurricane Katrina and also served as the sideline reporter and color commentator on the National Football League (NFL) in the show “NFL on FOX”.
She joined KTTV ROX 11 in 2004 as a general assignment reporter. She also hosted ‘EXTRA on essence’ and was the weekend host of ‘Good Day LA’ on KTTV, Fox Channel affiliate. In 2007, having been a football fan, she joined FOX NFL Sunday as a sideline reporter for national football broadcasts. She also covered major league baseball and basketball. In 2009 she began hosting “Extra on Essence”, an online entertainment show focusing on Hollywood’s most elite stars. She also served as a freelance reporter and host for KNBC.

Nischelle Turner Fibroids
Turner was diagnosed with uterine fibroids at the age of 35 after having gone through heavy and painful periods since she was a teenager. In an interview with PEOPLE she said the doctors and physicians gave her “quick fixes” like birth control to regulate her pain, which only made matters worse.
At the age of 35 the fibroids had grown so big and her stomach grew to a size she looked three months pregnant. When she went to the hospital the doctor mentioned fibroids and the diagnosis was confirmed with a transvaginal ultrasound and was told she needed to do a myomectomy, to remove them. The fibroids however came back when she was 40 years old, needing 13 surgically removed, and returned again at age 45. The doctor suggested she do a hysterectomy but she opted for another myomectomy, making it her third surgery in 10 years.
She added that she started working with a health and wellness coach in order to heal herself from the inside out. Her experience also saw her partner with the Black Women’s Health Imperative and Sen. Cory Booker to raise awareness on how fibroids disproportionately affect the Black community in hopes of raising money for research and treatment.
