Tamara is the White House Correspondent for NPR and also hosts NPR Politics Podcast. She joined the radio station in December 2009 as a business reporter where she reported on topics spanning the business world. In early 2010, she covered the aftermath of Haiti’s arthquake, and later she covered the oil spill in the Gulf. In 2011, she conceived of and reported “The Road Back To Work,” a year-long series featuring the audio diaries of six people in St. Louis who began the year unemployed and searching for work.
In August 2011, she became a congressional correspondent and in 2014 she was promoted to White House correspondent. During her tenure, she has covered the final years of the Obama administration, covered Hillary Clinton’s failed bid for president from start to finish and thrown herself into documenting the Trump administration, from policy made by tweet to the president’s COVID diagnosis and the insurrection. In the final year of the Trump administration and the first year of the Biden administration, she focused her reporting on the White House response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
She began her public radio career when she was fifteen years old as an essayist for NPR’s Weekend Edition Sunday but her first real job on radio was directing a show called The California Report at KQED. There was a daily 10 minute broadcast and her job was to ensure the date on the credits was correct and to pick the music, among other things. She says she once made a mistake after putting music after a story that readers thought it was offensive. The story was by Kai Ryssdal, who was a KQED reporter at the time after he witnessed the execution of a prisoner at San Quentin and wrote beautifully about the man’s chest moving up and down as he took his last breaths. She put the song “Better Off Dead” which readers didn’t appreciate.
In 2001, she began working on B-Side Radio, an hour-long public radio show and podcast that she co-founded, produced, hosted, edited and distributed for nine years. In 2004 she covered residential election for NPR Member station WOSU in Columbus, Ohio, and opened the state capital bureau for NPR Member station KPCC to cover then-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
