3 Sports legends who love to hit the casino

Betting is a pastime enjoyed by all types of people, sports stars included. With our sporting heroes in the limelight so often, we have, over the years, learned who likes to hit the casino from time to time.

In this guide, we’re going to look at three sports legends with a penchant for betting. In particular, we’ll look at England football icon Wayne Rooney, boxing star Floyd Mayweather Jr. and NBA legend Charles Barkley.

3 sports legends who love to hit the casino

It doesn’t matter whether you prefer playing at Pulsz or Caesar’s Palace; many people enjoy casino games. While online casinos have become popular of late, brick-and-mortar establishments still carry a big draw, especially for sports legends with money burning holes in their pockets.

Let’s take a look at some sports icons who like a night at the casino.

Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney is a former English footballer and one of the all-time sports stars of the game. Hailing from Liverpool, he began his career with his boyhood club, Everton, before moving to Manchester United.

During his many seasons with the Red Devils, he developed into one of the best English footballers of all time. He played a total of 762 club career games and 120 games for England.

In his club career, he scored 312 goals and was instrumental in creating 170 more. He also scored 53 goals for England on the international level and won multiple league titles and cups.

The spectacular nature of his goals and performances captured so many football fans’ hearts, and he’s carried those spectacular performances into his casino games – only not in the way he’d like.

On one forgettable trip to a casino in Manchester, Rooney reportedly lost £500,000 in just two hours of gambling. He was said to have been playing roulette and blackjack following a UEFA Europa League match against FC Rostov.

Witnesses reported seeing him place huge bets quite recklessly and losing, but that allegedly prompted him to bet even more.

If anything, this serves as a sobering reminder to bet responsibly.

Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. isn’t known as “Money” for no reason. The boxing legend and one of the all-time greats of the sport is known to enjoy a trip to the casino, but he’s also known for making big wins off the back of his bets.

Back in 2012, Mayweather reportedly won nearly $3m betting on college football. And this isn’t surprising, given how much he publicizes his stakes on the likes of his Twitter feed. Sometimes his bets are around the $25,000 range, but others are as high as $400,000.

It has led some commentators to speculate as to whether Mayweather has a gambling addiction. It’s something even Conor McGregor has spoken out about in the run-up to their exhibition fight.

Regular betting, especially with such high stakes, can only be seen as problematic. And there haven’t been many other big wins publicized by Mayweather since that 2012 haul.

It has led some to speculate that Mayweather could even be broke. It could be why he’s now agreeing to fight in so many exhibition matches against the likes of Logan Paul and Tenshin Nasukawa.

Charles Barkley

Charles Barkley is an interesting figure in the world of sport. The basketball star had a stellar 16-year career in the NBA as a power forward, playing for the Philadelphia 76ers, the Houston Rockets, and the Phoenix Suns.

He played with some of the greats of the game, including Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal, and Boston Celtics legend, Larry Bird.

But alongside that career, Barkley has also been a well-known fan of gambling, such that nowadays he’s the face of an online sportsbook and casino company. He claims to “love the juice” involved with sports betting, and that’s why he says it’s one of his favorite hobbies.

Barkley has spoken of his love for betting on different sports competitions but claims to do so responsibly, setting himself a limit of a whopping $200,000. His wins supposedly amount to millions, but he admits to losing millions too.

Nowadays, Barkley spends a lot of time supporting the world of sports betting. Alongside his work for a betting company, he creates video content in which he shares tips on betting on different sports. He also advocates for wider legalization of betting and commentates on NBA matches from time to time.
