Rachel Nichols Maria Taylor

According to an article by the NY Times, Nichols said that Maria Taylor got the job to host 2020 N.B.A. finals coverage because she was black and ESPN was “feeling pressure” on diversity. Nichols allegedly made the remarks during a phone conversation nearly a year ago after learning that she would not host coverage during the 2020 N.B.A. finals, as she had been expecting.

“I wish Maria Taylor all the success in the world — she covers football, she covers basketball. If you need to give her more things to do because you are feeling pressure about your crappy longtime record on diversity — which, by the way, I know personally from the female side of it — like, go for it. Just find it somewhere else. You are not going to find it from me or taking my thing away.”

Nichols later apologized on-air following the publication saying she was “deeply, deeply sorry I am for disappointing those I hurt, particularly Maria Taylor.”

Rachel Nichols Cancelled

On August 25, 2021 ESPN announced they have canceled “The Jump” hosted by Rachel. In a conversation with an adviser to the Lakers star LeBron James, Nichols, who is white, said that Taylor, who is Black, had been chosen to host 2020 N.B.A. finals coverage instead of her because ESPN executives were “feeling pressure” on diversity.

She was unaware the conversation was being recorded. Taylor has since left ESPN and joined NBC.

ESPN senior vice president for production David Roberts said in a statement; “We mutually agreed that this approach regarding our NBA coverage was best for all concerned. Rachel is an excellent reporter, host and journalist, and we thank her for her many contributions to our NBA content.”

Rachel confirmed the news in a tweet, she said, “The Jump was never built to last forever but it sure was fun.”
