Nickels is a glazier and conservator at The York Glaziers Trust. He joined the trust in 2019. YGT is the oldest and largest specialist stained glass conservation studio in Britain, and one of the largest in Europe. It is a charitable trust dedicated to the care and conservation of historic stained glass in York Minster and throughout the UK, and is a centre of excellence for conservation, innovation, research, and training.

The Trust undertakes conservation projects on behalf of owners and custodians of stained glass of all periods, in historic and modern buildings, from great cathedrals to the smallest of parish churches, in museums and art galleries, and in private collections.

Matt Nickels The Repair Shop

Matt is one of the experts on BBC One’s show The Repair Shop alongside the likes of Jay Blades, Will Kirk and Suzie Fletcher, since 2018. He appears as their specialist stained glass craftsman.

One of his most amazing works was when he was tasked with reassembling two badly damaged windows from a Victorian variety theatre. The windows were rescued by one of the actors shortly before the theatre was demolished in 1969, and passed on to his wife before he died. Widow Anne was left speechless when Matt managed to restore the windows to their former glory, giving her a fond reminder of her husband and his passion for the theatre.
