She has always had a passion in journalism and she got her first taste of television journalism while studying at Southern Illinois University, where she worked for the schools media. After graduating, she was an intern at the entertainment news magazine show EXTRA.

Maria is married to Dr. Justin Miller ‘Jay Miller’, who is an Assistant Professor in the College of Social Work at the University of Kentucky and serves as president of the Foster Care Alumni of America – Kentucky. He advocates for kinship care families as he was placed in foster care as a youth alongside her sisters due to his father’s crack cocaine addiction which saw him neglect them and abuse them physically.
During grade school, he had several stints in out-of-home care: first with family friends; then, in state foster homes. The stints were interrupted by brief periods of being placed back in the care of their father who however couldn’t stay clean long enough to adequately care for them. Her sister primarily remained in the care of their grandmother but at the age of 12, Jay delinquent behaviors coupled with the resentment he felt for his father, meant that he was far beyond his grandmother’s control and was taken back to foster care. He ran away from foster homes several times, mostly staying with friends
At the age of 14, her paternal aunt and her husband , aho at the time lived in Germany took him in and his sisters. This has led him to advocate for kinship care as this help the kids to keep ties to family, experience less trauma at parental separation, and have fewer educational disruptions.

She previously worked at WICD NewsChannel 15 in Champaign, Illinois as a morning and midday anchor. While there, she worked with the American Diabetes Association and the Girl Scouts.
She began her television career as an intern at WCIA, the CBS affiliate in Springfield before becoming the city beat reporter.
