Kaylee Hartung Biography

Kaylee Hartung is the sideline reporter for Amazon Prime Video “Thursday Night Football” NFL package alongside Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit. She is also a contributing correspondent for NBC’s ‘Today Show’. She is a former ESPN sideline reporter who then joined CNN as a news reporter and two years later she moved on to ABC News. While at ESPN, she won two Emmys for her reporting.

Kaylee is a versatile and skilled journalist who has reported from the football sidelines to the streets. She reported from the streets of Charlottesville when Heather Heyer was killed and a year later she returned to interview her mother. She has covered elections including the 2017 United States Senate special election in Alabama, interviewed the grieving survivors of the Parkland and Sutherland Springs shootings and reported on extreme weather events including Hurricane Florence, Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma and wildfires in Malibu and Paradise, CA.

Kaylee’s father, Joe Hartung, was a pilot born in Indonesia and grew up in Netherlands. He followed his father’s footsteps and became a pilot serving in the Royal Dutch Air Force. He immigrated to the US in 1975. In 1985, he started his aviation company and bought his first AT-6 Texan. The WWII advanced trainer aircraft is a familiar plane in the military because it was the last step for pilots before they graduated to fighters. He stripped it down and rebuilt it.

He went on to perform in airshows, flying formation displays, and making a name for himself flying aerobatics and racing WWII aircraft.

He died on May 4, 1996 in a plane crash while performing low level aerobatics. He was doing a barrel roll when the North American a T-6 trainer veered hard to the left, hit the ground at a 45 degree angle, then landed belly down in the middle of the runway. The a T-6 was a loan from a friend while his was being serviced for its next race.

Kaylee began her career in journalism after winning a a summer internship with NBC in New York City. The internship together with Washington and Lee’s stellar network of alumni helped her win a job interview with Schieffer. She went on to work as CBS Anchor Bob Schieffer’s assistant and associate producer for Face the Nation. She was one of three assistants who prepared Schieffer for the last presidential debate at Hofstra University in October 2008.

In the fall of 2012, she joined ESPN as an anchor and reporter for Longhorn Network. She hosted Longhorn Network’s flagship program Longhorn Extra, reported for Texas GameDay and crafted feature stories – two of which garnered LoneStar Emmys. She began as a sideline reporter for SEC Nation’s Saturday football coverage and rose through the ranks to become the sideline reporter for the SEC Network’s Prime Time Football Game. She also appeared on SportsCenter.

In 2017, she joined CNN as an Atlanta-based correspondent and after just two years she left to join ABC News as a correspondent based in New York.
