Karen is serving her first term as a representative in the 9th House District, which encompasses part of the cities of Detroit and Dearborn. State Rep. Karen Whitsett says that hydroxychloroquine and President Donald Trump, who touted the drug, saved her life in the battle of COVID-19. She said she learned on Monday, April 6, 2020 that she has tested positive for COVID-19 but had been taking hydroxychloroquine since March 31 after her doctor’s prescription after she and her husband sought treatment for a range of symptoms.
She told Detroit Free Press that she started experiencing shortness of breath, sinus issues, and swollen lymph nodes. Her doctor prescribed the drug as Trump has repeatedly touted the drug in combination with the antibiotic azithromycin, despite criticism from health professionals that it is unproven and potentially dangerous. She added that she started feeling relieve in “less than two hours.”
Whitsett also credits the president for saving her life. “It has a lot to do with the president … bringing it up. He is the only person who has the power to make it a priority.”
Asked whether she thinks Trump may have saved her life, Whitsett said: “Yes, I do,” and “I do thank him for that.”
