Joan Biskupic is an American journalist serving as CNN Senior Supreme Court Analyst. She has covered the U.S. Supreme Court for over 25 years and has written books about Justices Antonin Scalia, Sandra Day O’Connor, Sonia Sotomayor and Chief Justice John Roberts.

Joan Biskupic Education
Joan attended Marquette University for her undergraduate studies, graduating in 1978 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. In 1986, she earned a master’s in English and Renaissance drama from the University of Oklahoma. She earned her Juris Doctor in 1993 from Georgetown University Law Center.
In 2010 she received Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from Marquette University and in 2014 she was honored with a Doctor of Laws Degree from Georgetown University.
Joan Biskupic Parents
She is the daughter of the late Vincent J. Biskupic and Mary Jane Biskupic. Her mother, Mary Jane, was a children’s writer; among her stories were “The Runaway Llama” (1986) and “A Cry For Help” (1982), both in Highlights For Children. She began her writing career as an editor and publisher of The May Street Rag on Chicago’s South Side. She died on April 14, 2016.
Joan’s father was a lawyer who practiced law for 55 years in Chicago, Oak Brook and Naperville. He graduated from OLD Loyola Law School in 1953. He died in October 2008 at the age of 78.

Joan has eight siblings; Donna Biskupic, Carol Biskupic Knight, Sharon Moss, Steven Biskupic, Elaine Bunnell, Vincent R. Biskupic, Nancy Van Dis, and James Biskupic. Her brother Steven, is a former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, now in private practice while Vincent is a judge on the Outagamie Circuit Court.

Joan and her husband Lewis have one daughter, Elizabeth Bauer Lewis. She is an actor, singer, writer and vocal coach. She received an M.F.A. in Acting from Brown University/Trinity Repertory Company and a B.A. in Comparative Literature, focuses in Music and French Literature, from the University of Chicago.

Joan is a CNN Senior Supreme Court Analyst since 2017, she joined CNN in July 2016 as a part-time contributor and in July 2017 she became a full-time contributor. She is also a regular panelist on Washington Week and has appeared on The Diane Rehm Show, The Today Show, Good Morning America, Nightline, Face the Nation, and Stay Tuned with Preet.
She began as a Congressional Quarterly Weekly Report in 1989 where she covered legislative affairs on Capitol Hill and at times reported on the court. During her tenure, she won the Everett McKinley Dirksen Award for Distinguished Reporting of Congress for her coverage of Clarence Thomas’ Senate confirmation hearings.
She joined the Washington Post in 1992 as a Supreme Court correspondent, delivering her coverage through a more “political lens” for the Post audience.In 2000, she joined USA Today as a Supreme Court correspondent. In 2012, she left USA Today, to join Reuters News, Washington Bureau as the legal affairs editor-in-charge. She left that position in 2016 to join the University of California, Irvine, Law School as a visiting law professor, a position she held until June 2017.
