Dykes joined ESPN as a game and studio commentator at the start of the 1995-96 men’s college basketball season after serving as the women’s head basketball coach at the University of Arkansas from 2014 to 2017. He is now in his 20th season with the organization. He led the Razorbacks to a single NCAA tournament appearance with a 43-49 overall record. Dykes was a three-year letterman at the University of Arkansas under famous coach Eddie Sutton before joining ESPN.
Additionally, following his playing days, he went on to work for Sutton at Arkansas as a graduate assistant coach. Dykes’ coaching resume includes stops at Sacramento State, Appalachian State, University of Kentucky, Arkansas-Little Rock, and Oklahoma State as an assistant coach.
Along with that, he then worked as an NBA scout for the Seattle Sonics for three years before joining ESPN in the mid-1990s. Dykes worked as a men’s assistant basketball coach at the University of Arkansas, Appalachian State University, University of Kentucky, Arkansas State University, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and Oklahoma State University before joining ESPN for the first time. He’s also worked as a scout for the Seattle SuperSonics of the NBA. In 2006, Dykes was the Director of Athletics at Shiloh Christian School in Springdale, Arkansas.

On March 30, 2014, Jimmy was named the new head coach of the University of Arkansas women’s basketball team. After Tom Collen was fired at the end of the 2013–2014 season, Dykes took over as the women’s head coach at Arkansas. After finishing in the center of the SEC pack his freshman year, Dykes led his team of nine players to the NCAA Tournament.
Moreover, his Razorbacks upset 7 seed Northwestern in the first round before losing in the second round to second seeded Baylor. Dykes’ second season saw the squad finish 10th in the SEC and with a 12–18 overall losing record.
His third team came in last place in the conference, winning only two games.
