In February 2013, Fernandez was racially abused by a passenger on a Sydney bus for about 15 minutes while taking his two-year-old daughter to daycare. Another passenger intervened but was also approached by the assailant.
Fernández says the woman’s daughter physically abused his daughter.
“The woman’s daughter had cut and pinched my daughter from behind. It was a harmless no-brainer, but it made my daughter uncomfortable and confused. So I put my arm around her to protect her. The girl was still clinging to my arm. I turned around and said in a low voice, “That was my arm.”
The girl’s mother asked what was wrong with her and I told her what had happened. She denied that her daughter had touched me at all.
What happened next surprised me.
She started scolding me, accusing me of reaching behind our seats and touching her daughter. Of course she hadn’t done any of that. This accusation affected me a lot.
At this point, she was considering moving me to another location on the bus. However, the woman then began racial abuse that lasted the longest 15 minutes of my life. I thought, “What would Rosa Parks do?” She would stay. I have done it too, especially since 2013.
Fernández says other passengers offered their names and contact details to witness the incident after the woman and children got off the bus. Later he spoke to the bus driver, who said he should have moved. Fernández has referred to this incident as his “Rosa Parks moment.
