Isa Soares Biography

Isa Soares is an award winning CNN international correspondent and anchor based in the London Bureau. She hosts “Isa Soares Tonight”, which airs weeknights at 2pm ET (7PM London).

Her start at CNN was one of those right place at the right time moments as at the time, she was interning with the sports department when she received a call from the head of HR in London telling her to do an interview for a production assistant position. She thought it was a mistake as she had not applied for any position but the HR informed her that she had been recommended by several people.

Soares was born on January 6, 1979 in Lisborn, Portugal.  She was born to Portuguese parents  Annie and Lamar Bryant. At the age of eleven, together with her parents they relocated to London.

Isa Soares Qualifications – Education

Isa didn’t study journalism in college she instead learnt it on the job. She studied Lusophone with Hispanic Studies for her undergraduate degree at King’s College London. She wanted to be a diplomat but after the 9/11 attack she decided to do a MSc in International Relations with Economics at the University of Bristol.

At the time, the course explored extremism and radicalization. She says it was a fascinating time to be studying international relations as President W. Bush declared ‘war on terror’ that changed the landscape of the Arab world from Iraq to Afghanistan. Her thesis was on Angola’s 27-year civil war.

Isa is married to a Colombian husband Daniel Quintero. The couple met in 2006 and got married on June 19, 203. They have two sons Tomas born in 2016 and Nicolas born on 18 June 2018.

Daniel Quintero works at Mercuria Energy Trading S.A. as the European Head of Middle Office. He has also served as the Vice President -EMEA Connodities at J.P. Morgan as well as a tade support EMEA energy director at Morgan Stanley. He is a former caterham racer and worked for Caterham Motorsport in the U.K. In 2017 she won the first Alaco Motorsport Logistics Caterham Motorsport Seven 270R Championship race.

Soares is Portuguese. She has said her nationality has helped her in several situations. For example when she was in Venezuela when she told people she was Portuguese they would immediately start talking to her. She is also fluent in Spanish

Isa joined CNN as an intern at CNN’s Public Relations department. At the end of her internship, the sports team asked her if she would be interested in doing another internship as they needed someone who spoke Portuguese for Euro 2004, which was being held in Portugal. She was asked to go for an interview by CNN’s HR but she had not applied for the position and to her surrise several people had recommended her.

She worked as a producer and her big break came during the economic crisis in Portugal, the Troika, when Barack Obama went to Portugal, and she did production for several CNN teams in the United States. She was asked to go on Richard Quest’s show to talk about the economic crisis in Portugal. After doing the live show, she ended up doing more reporting until she was offered a position as a correspondent and reporter.

She reported for CNN Espanol, where she covered major European business stories. She also worked as a senior producer on the primetime business program Quest Means Business.

Career Highlights

  • She covered the Venezuela social and economic crisis. Her investigation on President Maduro’s gold mining in Venezuela won her an Emmy Award. In 2020, she went undercover in Caracas to reveal the abhorrent conditions in Venezuela’s public hospitals during the Covid-19 pandemic. Her coverage won her an Emmy nomination.
  • In 2020 and 2021, she highlighted the plight of Brazil Yanomami indigenous tribe with exclusive reports from the Amazon. She continously reported on the changing political landscape of Brazil under President Jair Bolsonaro and interviewed the then-candidate Lula da Silva and São Paulo Mayor João Doria ahead of Brazil’s presidential elections in 2022.
  • In 2017, she reported on the terror attack in Barcelona and Catalonia’s bid for independence. She investigated on Macedonia’s role in the production of fake news, and covered the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean, for which she won an AIB award.
