Erin McLaughlin Biography

Erin McLaughlin is an NBC correspondent reporting for all NBC News, MSNBC, and digital platforms including “Nightly News,” “The Today Show,” and “NBC NewsNow.” She is a former international correspondent for CNN based in London.

Erin has always had a passion of journalism whereby at the age of nine, she was posing as a journalist and creating her own newspaper about the history of Iraq and the 1991 Gulf War. As a freshman at Berkeley she volunteered to work for free at the Graduate School of Journalism but she never got the chance as they were many aspiring reporters volunteering their services than the school could handle. This led to her taking introductory economics and envisioned herself in marketing or consulting. She however wrote for The Daily Californian during her spare time and was part of the team covering the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Her journalism dream lived on but not as a print journalist. After graduating, she interned in CNN’s San Francisco bureau into a job as a researcher on the international assignment desk at the company’s Atlanta headquarters. In 2010 she joined CNN’s London bureau where she served until 2019 when she joined NBC News.

She followed her parents footsteps while growing up as she started singing at the age of five which helped her to receive a vocal scholarship to join college after an impromptu wedding performance with a college vocal professor. Prior to becoming a full-time correspondent, McLaughlin worked on many high profile stories as a producer. She was part of the Emmy-nominated team for CNN’s coverage of the Detroit attempted terror attack in 2009, and produced coverage of stories as diverse as the Anders Breivik trial in Norway, the European Union’s Greek bailout, the 2011 London Riots, and the trial of Saddam Hussein. She also helped coordinate CNN’s coverage of the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, William and Catherine.

While based in London she covered a range of stories in the UK and Europe, including Britain’s decision to leave the EU, the trial of Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito ‎and the Conclave of Pope Francis, with whom she also traveled on his visit to South Korea.

She also covered the violence in Jerusalem and the West Bank in 2015. She also covered the Ukraine election which saw Petro Poroshenko named president.

She has also covered aviation disasters such as the search for MH370. She was inside Sharm el-Sheikh’s security screening area following the Metro Jetplane crash. She also reported from the French Alps for the Germanwings crash, where it was revealed the plane’s co-pilot purposely crashed the plane.
