Clint, however, didn’t realize that the two had actually met several times before and he had simply forgotten. Kelly didn’t hold it against him, though; they soon started dating, and eventually Clint told Kelly he loved her.

“It was maybe a couple days later that she said, ‘I want you to know I don’t love you because of some feeling. I want you to know I love you because I choose you. And when we have to fight through stuff in our life, I choose to fight through those things with you.’ And I was like, ‘I’ve won the lottery.'”

Clint Harp Story

Clint was working in a medical sales job in Houston where he used to earn six figures but he quit to pursue his passion in woodworking. He always loved making furniture and his grandfather encouraged him to pursue his dream. He showed his grandfather a piece he had made which lead to him giving him money to buy more equipment. Clint continued to invest in smaller pieces of equipment like a table saw, drill press, and lathe for his garage workshop, all while teaching himself how to use the tools by watching YouTube videos.

As a way to save money opted for reclaimed wood and would go to construction sites to ask for leftovers. Even today, many of his projects are crafted from reclaimed or upcycled materials.

During an interview with Austin American-Statesman, he said there is beauty in bring back to life something that was left for dead.

“There is the beauty of this idea, of something being left for dead and brought back to life. It had a deeper meaning. I felt that way about myself. I was living my life one way doing the sales thing, which was fine, but I didn’t feel like myself. For me, I’m kind of reclaimed as well.”

In 2011 he left his corporate job to pursue woodwork. Together with his family they moved to a small apartment in Waco and decided to live off their savings while Clint tried to grow his career and his wife Kelly went to graduate school. He spent his days volunteering for Habitat for Humanity and searched for an inexpensive space for his workshop.

One of his friends recommended he call his friend Chip Gaines as he thought he may be interested in Chip’s stuff.

“I believe that wherever you can make connections, make connections, so I called him and left a message. He never called me back, which is no surprise, really. I probably sounded crazy, and he was really busy, even back then. The renovating, the designing, all of it — that’s really what they were doing for 10-plus years out in Waco. The cameras came along when they were already well into it.”

In 2012 when Clint was at his lowest he was at a gas station when he noticed a Magnolia Homes truck. He went up to the truck and asked the driver if he knew Chip and it turned out he was talking to Chip. Clint pitched his work to Chip who invited the Harps to come over for dinner later that week. At that dinner, Clint met Joanna who was selling furniture from their home and was looking to include more pieces. Joanna became his first client.

Soon after the local Habitat for Humanity, where he had been volunteering, was moving out of one of their workshops and offered to rent it to Clint for just $25 a month.
