Who is Jamieson Greer

Jamieson Greer is the United States Trade Representative. He was confirmed on February 27, 2025. He previously served in the department during President Trump’s first term as Chief of Staff to Ambassador Robert Lighthizer. He was involved in the Administration’s implementation of tariffs on China and subsequent negotiation of the U.S.-China Phase One Agreement. In addition, he was also a critical part of USTR’s efforts to negotiate, and obtain congressional approval for, the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Jamieson is well vased with International Trade as his career in law focused on helping companies use international trade laws and policies to achieve geopolitically sustainable business models.

Jamieson graduated from Brigham Young University with a B.A. in International Studies. He also holds a s J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law as well as a joint Master in Global Business Law from l’Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po) and l’Université de Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne.

Jamieson Greer Early Life and Family

Jamieson is the son of Michael Greer and Shannon Greer. He was born on March 4, 1979 in California. He was raised alongside his four siblings. His father, Mike Greer is a former special education teacher. He served as a trustee for the Del Norte County Office of Education and the Del Norte Unified School District. He led the Paradise Unified School District Board during the challenging Camp Fire period.

He attended Paradise High graduating in 1998. After high school, he joined Brigham Young University-Provo and spent two years on a mission to Brussels. After his return, he joined law school as well as joined the U.S. Air Force.

Greer has had an interest in international affairs since he was young. His family were were regulars at the library and always has a National Geographic around. In law school he studied international trade law.

Greer is a Veteran

Greer served in the U.S. Air force. He served in the U.S. Air Force Judge Advocate General’s Corps, where he represented the U.S. Government in criminal trials, administrative hearings, and adverse personnel actions domestically, internationally, and in combat zones. He also served as lead counsel in dozens of jury and bench trials and administrative litigation. In addition, he served a two-year term on Air Force Law Review editorial board.

In 2011, he was posted in Incirlik Air Base in Turkey where he served as the area defense counsel representing U.S. military personnel in various criminal courts, administrative hearings, and adverse personnel actions at U.S. military installations abroad. He left the service in June 2012.

Greer is a Former Trade Lawyer 

After leaving the Army, Greer joined Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and Affiliates as an associate in the International Trade practice group. While there, he represented corporate clients before Federal agencies and courts to secure trade remedies such as antidumping and countervailing duties.

He then joined Kirkland & Ellis as an Of Counsel in the International Trade & National Security practice group. He advised clients regarding compliance with export control, sanctions, and customs regulations.

In May 2020, he joined King & Spalding as a partner in the International Trade team. He focused on helping companies use international trade laws and policies to achieve geopolitically sustainable business models. His speciality includes dealing with competitors’ unfair trading practices and import competition, navigating the U.S.- China strategic competition, complying with national security policies, managing regulatory aspects of cross-border transactions, shaping U.S. government trade policy, and responding to government inquiries and investigations.

He has represented his clients s in international trade litigation before the Department of Commerce, the International Trade Commission, and federal courts. He has also assisted clients with advocacy before U.S. Congress and senior government officials and agencies with jurisdiction over international trade matters such as the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), the Office of Foreign Assets Control, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Bureau of Industry and Security, the National Security Council, the U.S. Departments of Commerce, Defense, Energy, State, and the Treasury.

Jamieson Greer Views on Tarrifs

During Trump’s first term, while serving as the Chief of Staff to USTR Ambassador Robert Lighthizer, Greer worked d very closely with Ambassador Lighthizer and senior White House officials on developing and implementing trade policy and advised the USTR on all aspects of the agency’s mission.

He played a role in many of Trump’s trademark trade actions, including negotiating the 2018 U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement and a series of tariffs on Chinese imports. In 2018, he led diplomatic talks to renegotiate the U.S.-South Korea free trade deal, known as KORUS, and shored up congressional support for the U.S.-Japan Trade Agreement in 2019.
